Namaste Tauseef

I'm very prostrate for bad news arrived from India.
There is a long way to go for arrive to peace between persons and for coexistence between people and nature!

I read what you wrote to Elna.
I think that environment and nature are "Cost centre", but they also can become "Profit centre" - in a good sense, obviously.
This is possible only small scale. For a small Park, a small region, for example.
In Italy there are some examples of "soft economy" in nature.
There are some people that earn some money from sale of biological products or craftmade articles.
These products have quality marks guaranteed by the Park or by organization that manage the natural region.
Take much time to convince people that environment can make an income!
To avoid that people abandon your environment, and that environment itself becomes subject of speculation.

Namaste Tauseef, yes it is terrible what happened in Mumbai - I followed it on the Internet and spoke to friends in Mumbai - it is horrible. I just pray that everybody will be okay.

I know where Chittogarh is - looked on my map of India! I still want to go to Udaipur one day! hopefully soon. Maybe we will meet - who knows.

As for the work - it must be a real challenge. I am sure you are familiar with the writings of Arturo Escobar about the commodification of nature - he wrote very interesting articles about it. I also want to refer you to the writings of Bram Buscher linked to neo-liberalism and its impact on conservation and the environment. Somebody that I enjoy reading very much and who I think understand processes very well is David Mosse. There is a lot of pressure on the environment nowadays to become as what you are saying become a 'profit centre" and we should proceed with wisdom - there are two different schools of thought in this regard and it would be interesting to see how this will play out in a country like India.

Bram and I did a paper at the beginning of the year where we looked at the project that I was working on then and the different paradoxes there are when we work in this field. It would be very interesting to hear your views in this regard.

It was good to talk with you like this and I hope we can continue our discussion on this.

Take care of your self and be safe. Elna

Namaste Taseef, aap kaise hai? Aj mai thik nahi hoo. My condolences to India and the people of Mumbai for the terror attacks and the people who died - it is a sad day for mankind.

Thank you for your enthusiastic response and I keen to hear about your research on the perceptions on the environment - I am sure you know about the centre in Ahmedabad? Wher about in Rajasthan are you from?

What in your view is some of the biggest challenges in working with people on the environment? I would like to get a sense of this from you as I can imagine that India (like here) has a lot of cultural barriers to overcome when we talk to people about the environment. Would you mind sharing some ideas.

And then may I please ask you to put a picture of yourself on your page - I am sure Massimo don't mind everybody looking like him but it does personalise the networking a bit more.
Until I hear from you - be safe.
Namaste, Elna

Namaste Taseef, aap kaise hai? I wish my Hindi was better to carry on a conversation. Mai Hindi seekh rahi hoo? (Hope you can understand my version of Hindi - I am learning Hindi in the hope to go to India and get involved in some environmental work in the future).Welcome to the network! I have been to India, and Rajasthan a few times and it is an amazing country. May I ask where about in Rajasthan are you from? I was in a small place called Rohet and I know that there are conservation efforts going around an antelope species which I always get confused about, I never can remember if it is the Blue Buck or the Black Buck if you know, please enlighten me. I have two favourite places in Rajasthan - Jodhpur and the Shekawati region and hope to return to India within the next year again. It would be good to hear what you are doing in Rajasthan - if you want to share. Namaste, Elna
