exploring your community through a community of practice

Keeping with the theme of exploring our community through a community of practice, I would like to initiate a discussion on the possibility of linking schools through this network where eco-clubs in schools can have contact with similar groups in other countries to encourage sharing experiences and ideas. Teachers and EE practitioners involved are welcome to brainstorm the subject as to how feasible such an idea would be. We probably will have to consider quite a few things such as the logistics involved, access to computers (especially in rural schools), students time etc.

If there are teachers, students and practitioners interested please enter into this discussion. Better even, if anyone would like to become the first school looking for a partnering school, please join the discussion and let hear how feasible this can be. Elna de Beer

We can Try it!
I would like to propose this idea to the group of teachers in contact with me.
I am thinking in particular at one primary school in Milan (6-10 years).
For several years in this school have created classes of small cooperatives (not necessarily eco-cooperatives).
Small cooperatives of this school seek a goal and they work for achieve it.
Students develop the idea, organize it, they find small funds.
Thus, in this way, students can grow together in cooperation
I like the idea of a primary school, I have a particular school at the foothills of the Drakensberg in mind in a small rural village called Kwapitela - I spoke to an NGO in the area and they will also join the network to see how we can do this. Incidently they have members in Milan as well - so we can really give this a serious try. I will upload pictures of the area on my page and then you can give the teachers an idea where in South Africa it is. Thank you very much for the response.
I'd like to report an interesting experience that involved two classes in
Milano with a class of students in a village inside the Amazon forest
(Brasil).

In this village Bianca Bencivenni and Paul Clark - two teachers - live with
Cablocos people.

They, in 1988, together with Association "Vivamazzonia", have founded a
little school along Rio Jauaperi.

In 1999 Bianca and Paul, with Cablocos children, wrote a book "O livro da
Selva".

This book is in italian and portuguese languages. I don't known if there is
a copy in another languages.

In Parco Nord Milano we have used this book in activity of environmental
education.

Italian children wrote some letters for Brasilian children with their
thoughts and drawings.

This is the answer of Cablocos children ...

Our correspondence continued
a few days to post the answers to our friends cablocos!!

Dear Tina and Massimo,

This is a most amazing project and exactly what I had in mind when we started this discussion. I am still trying to get access to a school in South Africa to share this with. I will remain in touch and it would be great if we could keep following this project to see what we can learn from this for a school in South Africa.

Elna
I'm very happy of this experience!
Tina is a good friend and her students work with attention and interest.
Words and pictures of children (italian and cablocos) are very beautiful.
I hope that work continue ... with south african children!
It 'a good idea .... my pupils will be excited to correspond with the children of South Africa...

HI Tina, I will try and get a school group to link with you, at the moment I am not directly involved with EE anymore but I am still very interested in supporting initiatives like what you are doing - this is really wonderful work. I will be in touch shortly. Elna
Hi Tina,

Please have a look at the attached file. Maybe we can get our school to school contact going by having the children write a letter to one another. What do you think?

I hope we can work very well together!

Hello All,

I do not have anything very useful to say that would contribute to this discussion, but I must say I like the initiative you guys are making! The good thing about it all is that you are focusing on young children, thus instilling a culture of good practice from a young age. Being a student in environmental studies myself, this kind of initiatives are of great interest to me. Thank you all and keep the good work up!
